Forest Inventory

Complete a large tree plot (all trees measured have a dbh > 9 cm) and a small tree plot (all trees measured are under 1.3 m in height). The number of parameters in each row is the same, except for the Crown Class. Whether you are inside the large or small plot depends on the value of the plot_type parameter.

Step 1: Establish a 11.28-m radius (22.56-m diameter) circular ground plot. Record the center location of your plot using your GNSS. Include the point ID inside the Central point plot ID parameter. Feel free to also walk the approximate perimeter or mark the locations of your flags. Using tape measures, a compass (digital or manual), and flagging pins, mark N-S and E-W transects through your ground plot. Divide your plot into four quadrants, e.g. NE, SE, SW, NW. Use flags or flagging tape as needed.

Step 2: Conduct a Large Tree Plot survey. Record trees with diameter over 9 cm in the 11.28 m-radius circle plot

Step 3: Conduct a nested 3.99-m radius (7.98 m diameter) Small Tree Plot nested at the center of your Large Tree Plot. Record all trees with a height of less than 1.3 m tall. Consider shrubs as a small tree if they have a central stem at 1.3 m height.
